It’s Smoothie Time
View from my office yesterday morning.
Despite the fact that it perhaps is the wrong season, I’m into smoothies right now. Why?
Well, maybe because I have to be.
My 12-day Wild Rose Detox ended on Tuesday (yay!) so I am now on Day 2 the Thorne MediClear cleanse my naturopath wants me to do. It’s a 3-week cleanse, and it involves consuming the Thorne MediClear powder twice a day for 3 weeks (in week 2 you have it three times a day!).
The powder is made up of rice protein with plenty of vitamins and minerals included to cleanse your liver. It smells like cake mix but it tastes…well, not quite like cake mix. If I tell myself it is cake mix though it makes it a lot easier to drink!
It’s not gross, don’t get me wrong, it’s just a bit sharper (so you have to add some agave to help it out) and it is very gritty, so adding 1 tbsp of flax oil or Omega 3-6-9 oil (my preferred oil) really helps reduce that.
The cleanse allows you to have the powder mixed with water or juice, or in a smoothie.
So I’ve been mixing up a few interesting smoothies…all of which you can easily have at home; either omit the powder or replace with your protein powder of choice for a protein-packed snack or meal replacement!
Here are some of my smoothie combinations:
My favourite green smoothie:
- 2 cups spinach leaves
- 1 cup almond milk
- 1 tbsp nut butter
- 1/2 frozen banana
- 1 tbsp ground flaxseed
- 1 tbsp Omega 3-6-9 oil
- Protein powder (or the MediClear powder) (1-2 scoops)
Cookie Dough treat:
- 1 cup coconut milk (I used light)
- 1/2 cup almond milk
- 1/2 frozen banana
- 1 Fitnessista Amazeball
- Protein powder (1-2 scoops)
Chocolate Craving (not that I can have this on this cleanse π but it is a favourite of mine!):
- 1 cup spinach leaves
- 1 cup light coconut milk
- 1-2 tbsp dark unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tbsp almond butter
- Stevia to taste
- Protein powder (1-2 scoops)
Berry treat!:
This actually had beet and kale in it too but it looks just the same π
- 1 cup spinach leaves
- 1/2 cup apple juice
- 1 cup mixed frozen berries
- 1/2 cup water
- Protein powder (1-2 scoops)
Mocha Mocha: (another I can’t have on this cleanse but it is really delish!)
- 1/2 cup decaffeinated (or caffeinated if you prefer) coffee (brew it strong)
- 1 cup almond milk
- 1 tbsp cocoa powder
- Stevia to taste (you can also use agave nectar if you don’t find it’s sweet enough)
- Ice
- Protein powder (1-2 scoops)
Pina Colada:
- 1 cup light coconut milk
- 1 cup pineapple chunks
- 1/2 cup pineapple juice
- Ice
- Protein powder (1-2 scoops)
- 1 tbsp shredded unsweetened coconut to top!
QUESTION:
Now I need your help!
As I have to have a smoothie a day for the next 3 weeks, I will get bored fast. What are your favourite smoothie combos? I can pretty much eat anything except chocolate/cocoa powder on this cleanse so your suggestions would be welcomed!
And for something to laugh about later – because it’s not entirely untrue – a friend of mine sent me this a couple of weeks ago:

i’ve also been craving smoothies this winter, but mostly because it’s still 60 degrees out! i’m jealous of your window view. we are suppose to get snow tonight but i doubt it will actually stick. i just want one storm so i can take photos of the snow and then i’ll be ready for spring! π

Anna
Don’t be jealous of the view! The snow is extremely annoying after one day haha. I know what you mean about wanting one storm and then spring. I am more than ready for spring already lol!

What a great idea to put an amazeball in a smoothie! I’ve been following the fitnessista for years but haven’t gotten around to making those little beasts. You MIGHT have just inspired me to get going on that π
By the way, I’m completely jealous of your office view π I’ve never seen snow in my life!

Oh her amazeballs are soooo good. My favourite snackeroo though I find it hard to stop at one – they do really well in the smoothies too!
I am still not a big fan of snow – I was enthralled by it the first time I saw it but then it got old pretty quick!

Yum, those smoothie recipes look fabulous!!
Wow, we have way more snow here way in the burbs. I think we got around 10 inches in total!!

I heard! My friend who lives on the border of Langley/Abbotsford just visited today and said they have so much more snow out there. Crazy, I heard storm warnings for Chilliwack on the radio too!

haha, I saw that Shit Yogis Say video last week and I love it.
I’m glad you did this post. I have been all about smoothies lately, too! This is one of my faves. It tastes amazing even without the cocoa & cinnamon added <3 …and now I'm off to make one!

That sounds amazing! How I wish I could have cocoa powder on this cleanse – the only thing I miss is the occasional bite of chocolate!

I just saw that yogi’s video yesterday! It is hilarious, and you are right, not totally untrue! haha I’ve seen a lot of different videos of those, and they are so funny! You should check out the shit girls don’t say, that one is hilarious and so true as well!!!
All of those smoothies sound so delicious, especially that cookie dough one! I will have to give that one a try.

Ooh try the cookie dough one yes! I know I love this video – I’ll check out the one you recommended for sure!

I’ve done that cleanse before! The week 3 is the toughest – I actually brought a mini blender to work and I was making smoothies in the conference room! HA!

Anna
I just bought myself a Magic Bullet for exactly that purpose lol!

Hi, why the cleanse? And what are the ingredients on the powder….im stupid and just bought a whey protein…oops…my body isn’t being too happy with me now…but i have to use that whey now!

Anna @ The Guiltless Life
Oh there’s a few things my naturopath and I have been working on to try and ‘clean up’ in my body but detoxing my liver has been a major priority as she suspects that’s causing some issues, so both of these cleanses are very focused on liver cleaning. This MediClear powder is rice protein plus added vitamins and minerals. It has some molasses in as a sweetener but no others. If you are looking for a new protein check out the post I did on pumpkin protein powder – I’m definitely in love with its stats! Once you’ve used up the whey of course :). Thanks for stopping by T!

Karlee @ BringingBackBalance
I just found your blog and I love it! I am from Vancouver (coquitlam), but I moved to Toronto for school. I have done a few cleanses before, and they are always so tough but I always felt soo amazing while on them.
I am actually thinking about starting another one … I haven’t fully recovered from the amount and types of food that I ate during Christmas, and I think a cleanse will definitely help kick start it.
Smoothies are my go to all the time, so I know what you mean about getting sick of them. Can you add any extracts or flavours? I really like adding mint into mine. I also reallly like pumpkin smoothies! Also if you are feeling crazy try adding in some ginger!

Anna @ The Guiltless Life
Thanks Karlee, I’m so happy you found me! Those are great tips – I have heard about the merits of adding ginger to juices and smoothies in particular, but have never tried it for fear it would overwhelm the other flavours. I should just get on it and give it a go! I would definitely recommend the Wild Rose Detox I did – the cleanse I’m on right now is fine, but it’s a bit long at 3 weeks and you don’t feel as obviously better on it (though that is most likely because I’m doing it right after the Wild Rose). The Wild Rose is 12 days which I feel is doable for anyone. Good luck and keep me posted!
